Is Your Child's Brain Development Being Limited
by Poor Motor Skills?
Motor skills are the abilities we use to move and control our body. There are four main motor skill groups: Object Control, Coordination, Body Management, and Locomotor Skills. These skills are important for everything we do, from paying attention, to reading, handwriting, speaking, doing mathematics, playing a sport, riding a bicycle, or just simply playing
Motor skills development is essential because it enables daily tasks, supports cognitive development, enhances social interactions, and contributes to physical health. Motor skills enable children to explore their environment, build confidence, and develop independence. It is crucial for academic success and can help prevent developmental delays.
Cognitive functions are the mental processes involved in gaining knowledge and comprehension. These include thinking, learning, memory, problem-solving, and attention. Cognitive development refers to the growth and strengthening of these mental processes as a child matures.
Research shows a strong connection between motor skills and cognitive development. When children engage in activities that require motor skills, like stacking cups, catching, striking etc. they are also practicing cognitive skills such as planning, focus, and decision-making. Movement activities stimulate brain areas associated with these cognitive functions, fostering a more holistic development.
Focusing on motor skills during early childhood is vital because this is a critical period for brain development. Activities that enhance motor skills not only build physical capabilities but also stimulate cognitive growth. For instance, striking a ball is an excellent activity that develops object control motor skills. This task requires precision and hand-eye coordination, as the child must learn to predict and intercept . Additionally, it involves planning and problem-solving, which are skills important for academic tasks, where coordination, planning, and attention to detail are essential.
Many learning problems in children are actually caused by weak motor skills that look like learning difficulties. For example, if a child has trouble catching a ball, they might also struggle with reading, handwriting, and math. These activities need similar skills like timing, coordination, and object control skills. By improving motor skills early, learning can become easier and lead to better success in school.
